The Olpererhütte Bridge: A Zillertal Icon

The Olpererhütte suspension bridge—officially named the Kebema Panoramabrücke—is a masterclass in combining simple alpine infrastructure with breathtaking natural design. Built at an altitude of approximately 2,390 meters above sea level, this narrow footbridge spans a rushing mountain creek fed by glacial runoff from the mighty Olperer mountain (3,476 meters).

The bridge itself is relatively short, stretching only about 15 meters across the stream bed. It features a sturdy steel-cable construction and a wooden plank walkway with wire mesh side railings, designed to withstand the harsh high-alpine winters. While its practical purpose is simply to allow hikers on the Berlin High Trail (Berliner Höhenweg) to cross the creek safely during the summer melt, it has evolved into one of the most famous landmarks in Austria due to its unparalleled, unobstructed view of the turquoise Schlegeis Reservoir and the ice-capped peaks of the Zillertal Alps.

Behind the Scenes: The Olpererhütte Bridge Illusion

If you have seen photos of the bridge online, you likely felt a slight sense of vertigo. In photographs, it appears as though the bridge is hanging precariously over a sheer, thousand-meter drop directly into the deep blue lake below. This spine-chilling perspective is actually a brilliant optical illusion. In reality, the bridge is 100% safe and sits only a few meters above a shallow, rocky mountain stream. There is solid ground directly beneath it and a gentle slope just past it. The dramatic “cliffhanger” effect is created entirely by the specific topography of the mountainside and clever camera angling:

  • How to shoot it: To capture the illusion, the photographer needs to stand slightly uphill from the bridge, inside or next to the dry parts of the creek bed, and crouch down low.
  • The visual trick: From this low, uphill perspective, the camera lens aligns the wooden deck of the bridge perfectly with the distant surface of the Schlegeis Reservoir far down in the valley. The sloping mountainside between the bridge and the lake completely disappears from the frame, creating the breathtaking illusion that you are floating in mid-air over a massive abyss.

Finding the Olpererhütte Hike Trailhead

To experience the bridge and its famous view, you must first navigate to the correct starting point. The official Olpererhütte hike trailhead is located at the shores of the reservoir and is easily reachable via the Schlegeis Alpine Road toll route. You must park at Schlegeis Reservoir Parking Lot P2 (often marked explicitly on local signs as the Olperer Hütte Parkplatz). This lot is located a few hundred meters past the main P1 parking lot. If you reach the very end of the road at P3, you have gone too far. –> find the Schlegeis Reservoir parking lot

Right at the edge of the P2 parking lot, directly facing the mountain slope, you will find a large yellow Austrian hiking signpost. Look for Trail 502, clearly marked for the Olpererhütte. From the trailhead, the hike covers an elevation gain of 600 vertical meters over a distance of roughly 3.5 kilometers. The trail consists of a well-maintained but steep, continuous series of stone steps and switchbacks cutting through alpine meadows. It takes a steady 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking to reach the Olpererhütte (2,388 meters). Once you arrive at the mountain hut, the suspension bridge is located just a short 5-minute walk further uphill along the path leading toward the Friesenberghaus.

💡 My Personal Local Tip: Escape the Crowds – go to the Dominikushütte
After you have captured your perfect shot at the Olpererhütte suspension bridge, here is what I highly recommend doing as a local: skip the busy crowds and head directly back down toward the Schlegeis Reservoir to visit the Dominikushütte. While most tourists stay up at the main hut, this charming mountain inn offers an absolute oasis of peace. It is the ultimate place to reward yourself with authentic, real Austrian comfort food. Their typical Kaiserschmarrn (traditional shredded pancakes) is honestly incredible—and you get to enjoy it alongside arguably the best view overlooking the turquoise lake, completely without the mass of tourists surrounding you.
